A new year, a new beginning and all of that sappy crap. I always feel a bit odd about starting something on New Year's Day. It's like a little cackling voice in the back of my mind that's saying that I'm doomed to fail because I'm doing the stereotypical thing. Something I'm doing to counteract this is to not call anything a "resolution" but instead a goal. "Resolution" just sounds so... optimistic in a naive way. "Goal" sounds realistic and concrete, like you can still make a little progress even if you don't meet the goal in the end. You fail resolutions, but you fall short of goals. So, I like goals better.

So, my goals for 2012 are as follows:

- Write everyday with 750words.com. I tried this last year with Write or Die. It worked for the first few months, then I started to get lazy. Without any time limits or ultimate rewards I found myself getting lazy and it eventually dithered out. I'm hoping that this site might make me a bit more motivated.

- Write a new piece of fiction every month. Fanfiction, original, long or short, incomplete or no, I don't care. I just need to get writing, damnit! I really need to expand my portfolio and start actually finishing some short stories and sending them out and hopefully selling a few.

- Do some sort of big fannish project. I have something in mind, but it's something that I will have to really commit to as it will take a long time. What I'm thinking is that I'll get at least ten parts of it done first before actually posting them, then see if it drums up an interest and if it does I'll see if I can keep going with it. I'm thinking if I can get far enough ahead on it before I start posting then it'll take off some of the pressure. As long as I can maintain that cushion, of course.

- Write a big fanfic. That sort of ties into the above goals, but it's still something that I really want to do just for the sake of doing it. I have a couple of ideas banging around in my head that I'm itching to get out.

- Finally something not writing related: get a new job. I've definitely outgrown this job and desperately need something new. Especially if I want to get a new apartment in the near future, then I need something which will give me more than twelve hours a week. It's a tall order for Halifax, but I'm staying optimistic.

- Get out of debt. More desperately than ever I need to get out of this debt hole. I'll easily be able to pay off my student loans this year, but my debt to the university might be a bit harder. I'll get there, though. I'm determined to. I desperately want to go back to school, and I can't do that while I still owe another place money. Blah.

And with that I think I've run out of goals. I do have a few other more vague ones, like do more creative stuff period. I really would like to try to get back into sculpting and painting, but it's just a matter of actually scheduling myself and working into my day to day life. I think I can do it, but I just have to get motivated. I also want to meet more people and get involved in more fannish things. Maybe I'll get involved in a challenge community or two.

Happy New Year, everyone!
